The National Police of Arrecife has arrested a 55-year-old man after being caught 'in flagrante' transporting around one ton of hashish between Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

The events took place on the morning of last February 10, during one of the routine controls carried out by agents of the Narcotics Group of the Judicial Police of the Local Police Station of Arrecife in the Puerto de Los Mármoles, with the aim of preventing the transport of narcotic substances in vehicles accessing or leaving the island.

In the course of the operation, the officers proceeded to identify the driver of a van, to whom during the interview, the agents detected a notable state of nervousness and incoherent responses, which motivated a more exhaustive search of the vehicle.

As a result of the inspection, a high number of cardboard boxes containing narcotic substance were located inside.

After the transfer to police facilities and the official count, it was verified that the seized drug amounted to a total of 988 kilograms of hashish, distributed in 24 packages, with an estimated value in the illicit market exceeding 1,600,000 euros.

The detainee was placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority, who ordered his provisional imprisonment.

The National Police continues reinforcing controls in ports and strategic points of the archipelago with the aim of combating drug trafficking and guaranteeing citizen security.
