Stalin Borbor, fatally run over in Arrecife, was sitting on a sidewalk between two cars when an SUV traveling on Canalejas street hit one of them, which ended up running over the young man. The police are considering that the driver of the SUV did not realize the tragedy and left the scene, as stated this Monday by the head of the Local Police of Arrecife, José Antonio Lasso.
The accident occurred around 5:45 a.m. "It was a fatal accident with some peculiarities," Lasso indicated. Thus, he explained that "there was an impact of a vehicle against another parked vehicle." "And, unfortunately, in front of the parked vehicle there was a person sitting on the sidewalk, who was run over by the parked vehicle and died from the impact," he reported.
The driver, according to Lasso, left the scene because he did not even realize the tragedy that had just happened. "We think it is practically impossible to see the pedestrian and because of how it was later, it was not possible to see him after the impact either. The young man was between the vehicle and the sidewalk and more than half of his body was under the car," explained the head of the Local Police of Arrecife on Radio Lanzarote.
After the events, the police began to make the relevant inquiries to find out which vehicle had impacted the parked car, triggering the dramatic accident. "We already had the make and model, when the driver voluntarily appeared in the afternoon," he said. Thus, the relevant procedures were processed, which will be sent this Monday to the Court.
The driver was arrested "at first to take his statement and be assisted by a lawyer, since the imputation of a crime could result." However, being a person with a recognized address and "with sufficient guarantees" that he would go to court to testify, "he was released."
A "very narrow" street
The fatal accident took place on Canalejas street, a "very narrow" road. "With the parking lots on this street, the vehicle is forced to go very close to the curb. Sometimes, a touch to the curb causes the deviation of the march and if you go with speed, well, too. In this case, it has not been determined that it was above the speed limits," he clarified.
The head of the Local Police of Arrecife believes that "if it had been a small vehicle" that collided with the parked car "it would not have displaced it." "A series of circumstances have occurred that have led to this fatal outcome," he said.
And, the image of a man resting on a sidewalk after a night of drinks "is nothing strange." "Many people go out partying, have a couple of drinks and sit on a curb to recover a bit. It's not a rare image." In this case, unfortunately, the accident took the life of a young Ecuadorian, resident on the island.
