The Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard of Lanzarote has identified the owner of a Podenco breed dog as the alleged perpetrator of an animal abuse crime by omission. According to the Civil Guard, the proceedings have been made available to the courts this week.

The Huella a Huella association filed a complaint in March last year, after the dog was found days before in Uga. The animal had a chip and, according to the association, was abandoned and seriously ill. "Let's remember that Athenea was found in such poor condition that after 10 days, on veterinary recommendation, she had to be euthanized as her injuries were incompatible with life and her pain could no longer be alleviated with any treatment", Huella a Huella said in a statement.

The association has expressed its satisfaction that its denunciation work has paid off. They have also indicated that "for reasons unknown to them", at the time "no investigation was carried out in this regard". For this reason, the association recently, according to what they stated in the statement, filed "a formal complaint with the competent administration and the procedure was initiated". Now, Huella a Huella even states that the dog's owner has already been charged, although for the moment Seprona only confirms the transfer of the proceedings to the Court.

"May these abuses be punished"

Now, after the Seprona's action, they have indicated that they are "waiting for justice to act accordingly and punish these abuses that are committed against animals on our island and demand accountability for the suffering and subsequent death of Athenea".

They have also advanced that they will continue fighting to ensure that "the necessary actions are carried out to bring these cases to justice, and we will go all the way to defend them".
