A fisherman from Órzola was adrift this Tuesday after his boat suffered a breakdown north of the island of Lanzarote, according to the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium.
Apparently, the engine of the 3.5-meter inflatable boat he was traveling in broke down and the wind moved him up to 25 miles north of the island. The helicopter went in search of him, rescuing him in good health and transferring him to the César Manrique airport.
The zodiac had been detected late in the afternoon by a Rescue plane that was searching that area of the Atlantic in search of boats with immigrants of which there has been no news since they left days ago from the coasts of southern Morocco and northern Sahara, according to the alerts received.
Its location initially raised fears that it was another migratory tragedy with a single survivor on board, as has already happened on several occasions in that same area; the last one, in September, during cyclone Hermine. However, the small dimensions of the inflatable boat were striking. In fact, his partner was already notifying the authorities about his disappearance.
