The Government Delegation in the Canary Islands confirmed this Tuesday that the cocaine seized by the Civil Guard south of the Canary Islands aboard the merchant ship Arconian is "probably the largest haul seized in Spain in many years".

The Civil Guard continues to search under the supervision of the National Court in the Navy base in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that freighter flying the Comoros Islands flag, which was intercepted on Friday when it was heading from Sierra Leone to Libya.

Official spokespersons for the corps have so far refused to provide any data on the operation, because there is secrecy of the investigation, but the Unified Association of Civil Guards has announced that the Arconian was transporting 30 to 45 tons of coke.

"It is a great operation for which the Civil Guard must be congratulated. An investigation that has yielded a very powerful result, because it is probably the largest Spanish haul in many years," the Government delegate on the islands, Anselmo Pestana, told journalists this Tuesday.

The delegate also refused to go into any detail, because it is also expected that "the highest authorities of the State will give the news these days".

So far, it has only transpired from unofficial sources that 23 people have been arrested in the operation and that some of the suspects were armed with assault rifles.

In fact, the AUGC published a photo on its X account with six of the weapons seized: three rifles and three pistols.
