The Civil Guard is investigating a company in Lanzarote following complaints from the scientific community and ecologists about social media posts showing the capture of protected species during their recreational fishing activities.
The Civil Guard's citizen service office also received a complaint in this regard, so Seprona, the Nature Protection Service, is investigating the veracity of these events and the type of activity carried out by the company.
Uncontrolled recreational fishing can have a significant impact on populations of fish and other marine species, especially when globally protected species are caught. Although some recreational fishing companies claim to practice catch and release, capturing protected species, even if they are returned to the sea, is illegal.
The Civil Guard has the responsibility to protect the environment and to investigate any activity that may endanger the fauna and flora of the archipelago. Recreational fishing is an activity that must be carried out responsibly and in a controlled manner, and it is necessary for companies that carry it out to comply with all the regulations and rules established to preserve the area's biodiversity.
