The events took place on April 17, when some workers were working on construction sites in the town of Tiagua in Lanzarote. While carrying out work on the ground, they located a semi-buried object that caught their attention, and after observing it more closely, they realized from its shape and size that it could be some type of explosive device or projectile, so they notified the emergency services.
After the warning, a patrol of the Guardia Civil of Costa Teguise went to the site, which once they analyzed the object confirmed that it was an artifact, so they activated the corresponding protocol for these situations, securing and cordoning off the area, not allowing anyone access to it, proceeding to notify the operational services center to activate the Explosives Disposal Group (GEDEX) of Lanzarote.
Once the GEDEX specialists attended the site, they observed that it was a 50mm caliber mortar projectile, carrying out the appropriate checks, and securing the area, proceeding to its removal for subsequent destruction. Once the projectile was removed, the restrictions on access to the site were lifted and passage was opened for people.
On the part of the Guardia Civil, it is recalled that upon finding a possible artifact, it must not be handled, one must move away from the place and immediately notify the Guardia Civil or Emergency Services, likewise, it is made known that all material of military use is exclusively for the use and possession of the Armed Forces, with any other use being prohibited.
