Six members of a Romanian gang have been arrested for the theft of jewelry worth around 3.5 million euros that took place in the Joyería de Puerto del Carmen in the early hours of June 17. The operation, according to sources in the Civil Guard, remains open and further arrests are not ruled out.
According to these same sources, this is an internationally operating gang and, in the case of Lanzarote, it is believed to be related to three robberies, one of them at another jewelry store.
The arrests began a month ago and almost all of them have been carried out in Romania. The latest took place this Thursday and the Civil Guard has also managed to recover part of the jewelry stolen from Joyería Santos.
Security cameras had captured three thieves
It should be remembered that security cameras captured three thieves during the robbery, which took place shortly after 3 a.m. on June 17.
According to the owner of the business at the time, the thieves accessed the jewelry store "through the terrace, bending two metal security doors and destroying the four locks that were there". From there they managed to access the bathroom and, through a false ceiling, in which they made "several holes", enter the establishment. "The curious thing is that they did it right above where the most valuable jewels were located," the owner pointed out at the time.
The assailants "emptied the entire section and took numerous jewels, including high-value watches", with the total value of what was stolen amounting to 3.5 million euros, in addition to causing various damages to the premises.
