Mararía sculpture in Femés and several village walls vandalized: the City Council is working on repairs

The sculpture of Mararía, a work by Lanzarote artist Cintia Machín and one of Femés's cultural symbols, was found this weekend completely spray-painted with metallic gray paint. The act of vandalism, which surprised residents early Sunday morning, has generated strong indignation in the town.

The piece, created by municipal commission to pay homage to the literary character immortalized by Rafael Arozarena and his connection to the town, is located at the foot of the Femés viewpoint, one of the most visited enclaves in the municipality. The vandalic act has covered the entire surface of the sculpture, affecting its original finish.

In addition to the attack on Machín's work, **several walls in the town have appeared with graffiti**, which reinforces the hypothesis that the incidents occurred on the same night

The City Council has reported that since early this Tuesday, December 9, municipal teams have been working to remove graffiti and repair the damage, both to the sculpture and the affected walls. The institution has expressed its "strong condemnation" of what happened and recalled that these are public and heritage assets that are part of the cultural landscape of Femés.
