Over the past year, the National Police in Arrecife have investigated more than a dozen people for filing false reports and simulating crimes, behaviors that are criminal offenses and, in the most serious cases, have led to the arrest of those responsible and their handover to judicial authorities.
These types of practices are not isolated and are repeated in different parts of the national geography, motivated by purposes ranging from attempting to defraud insurance companies for the alleged loss or theft of personal belongings, to covering up other crimes or justifying personal and domestic situations.
Among the incidents being investigated by the agents are reports detailing alleged purse snatchings by strangers, nonexistent entries into homes without signs of forced entry, or staged muggings with a knife in the city center. In one of the cases, a violent robbery was even faked to justify the removal of an electronic monitoring bracelet imposed as a precautionary measure by the judicial authorityPolice investigations, supported by technical checks, analysis of statements, and verification of evidence, made it possible to detect inconsistencies and clarify the falsity of the reported events
A misuse of public resources
The National Police reminds that false reporting and the simulation of a crime cause a serious disruption to the normal functioning of public services, by unnecessarily mobilizing human and material resources that should be allocated to assisting real victims and prosecuting actual crimes.
Call for civic responsibility
The National Police reminds citizens of the importance of acting with responsibility and truthfulness when filing a report, warning that false reports and the simulation of a crime are offenses defined in the Penal Code and can carry serious criminal consequences.
