On Monday night, the La Santa hostel suffered a new fire again. The fire started around 00.00 hours and has affected about forty mattresses that were stacked in a room. Although the cause is currently being investigated, it is ruled out that they were intentional, according to the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
According to the president of the Security and Emergency Consortium, Francisco Aparicio, the flames affected "only about forty new mattresses that were stacked in a room", and thanks to the "rapid action" of the firefighters "there were no injuries to regret", he adds.
In addition, the "exquisite coordination" of the members of the Consortium allowed the fire to "not affect adjacent units", he points out.
For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare, Marciano Acuña, explained that: "Currently the La Santa hostel is the temporary shelter for unaccompanied minors who arrive on our coasts, and fortunately they were all able to spend the night in the place."
Likewise, Acuña as head of the La Santa hostel, reports that the Cabildo is "currently working on finding another location to house the unaccompanied minors who arrive on the island irregularly, thus freeing up the current space so that it can recover its previous use", he concludes.
