Justice dismisses the case of Cathaysa, who was found dead in the trunk of a car

The Court of Instruction Number 5 of Arrecife has provisionally shelved the case of Cathaysa Rodríguez, the young woman who was found dead naked in the trunk of a car in Arrecife in April 2007. This case is shelved without anyone having been arrested or charged for the death of this Lanzarote native. However, from the press office of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC), they assure that if in the framework of a police investigation new clues are found or new evidence is presented, the Cathaysa case could be reopened.

Cathaysa's story dates back to 2007. The young woman appeared dead in Arrecife, six months after she disappeared. It was her own mother who found her body inside a vehicle. During all this time, Ester Rodríguez, the young woman's mother, has tried to find evidence outside of the police and judicial investigation, which maintains that it was not a crime, to clarify the circumstances of her daughter's death.

Ester has always criticized the police investigation and has assured that there is evidence "that was not taken into account." "It cannot be that people die and because they are indigent or drug addicts nothing more is done," said Félix Río, the criminologist who has helped Cathaysa's family in the private investigation, in an interview with La Voz.

After Cathaysa's disappearance on November 9, 2006, her mother went to the Municipal Police of Arrecife three times to report her disappearance. "They didn't pay attention to me. Everyone told me that my daughter had hooked up with some boy and that she would come back. Since nothing so terrible had happened in Lanzarote before, the police didn't take me seriously," Ester lamented.

Therefore, after asking and investigating on her own, Ester ended up finding the corpse of her daughter in an advanced state of decomposition inside the trunk of a car. This mother assures that she will not rest until she knows what happened to her girl, until she finds "the culprit of her little girl's death."
