The National Police has seized in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria a shipment of 21 kilos of heroin that an organization intended to introduce into the peninsula through a new drug trafficking route.
In the operation, named Corcel and which its police chiefs will detail this Wednesday in Madrid, four people who traveled from Toledo to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have been arrested to receive the drug and subsequently introduce it into the peninsula using rental vehicles.
The detainees, who were two couples and are all in prison, were intercepted 'in flagrante delicto' by agents when they were carrying out the drug transaction in a hotel cafeteria in broad daylight. The heroin was hidden in plastic supermarket bags inside a suitcase.
In a statement, the National Police describes this operation as a "relevant advance" in its fight against heroin trafficking, as it has allowed the detection of a new route for the introduction and transit of this substance to the Iberian Peninsula.
According to statistics from the Central Unit for Criminal Intelligence corresponding to the police activity developed in 2025 by the Central Unit for the Fight against Drugs and Organized Crime (UDYCO) and its Central Narcotics Brigade, last year seizures of this drug notably increased, with 66 kilos compared to about 8 kilos in 2024.
