The Civil Guard has arrested three people and investigated two others for the alleged commission of crimes of motor vehicle theft, forgery of official documents, and usurpation of civil status.

The investigation began last March 2026, after the intervention of agents from the Traffic Detachment of the Civil Guard of Las Palmas in an accident between two cars.

The agents then detected a possible irregularity in the license plate of one of the vehicles involved. At that moment, they requested the intervention of the Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT), integrated into the Road Safety Investigation Unit of the Traffic Subsector of the Civil Guard of Las Palmas, to clarify what had happened.

The GIAT results confirmed that both the identity provided by the driver to the agents and the license plate of the crashed vehicle were allegedly false.

Likewise, knowledge was gained of a report filed with the National Police of Valencia by the legitimate owner of the vehicle associated with the license plate, who stated that neither she nor her car had ever been in the Canary Islands.

According to the armed institute, the actions allowed for the determination of the driver's true identity, who allegedly provided the complete details of a third party in order to evade police identification, as he had lost the validity of his driving license and had been judicially deprived of his right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds.

Two identical vehicles with the same license plate

In the course of the investigation, two passenger cars of the same make, model, and color were located in the south of the island, bearing the same license plate coincident with the one under investigation.

Both cars were on display for sale, having been stolen from inside a warehouse. The investigation identified the person who claimed to be the current owner of the vehicles, who stated that he had acquired them in a "lot" for a certain amount, without being able to document the acquisition of the same.

Likewise, the investigations carried out led to the identification of a person allegedly linked to the obtaining, issuing, and subsequent installation of the duplicate license plates that the seized vehicles were carrying.

From the investigations carried out, indications emerged that the investigated driver, his companion, and the person whose identity was allegedly used knew each other previously and maintained a friendship. Likewise, this last person would have become aware, on dates after the traffic accident, of the alleged use of their identity, consciously omitting this detail in their initial statement as a witness/victim to the Civil Guard, thus consciously hindering the correct identification of the perpetrator of the acts.

Once the police actions were completed, the investigated and arrested individuals were informed of their rights and summoned to appear before the Judicial Authority.

Criminal Consequences

The investigations carried out were sent and delivered on May 12 to the Court of First Instance of Telde (Las Palmas).
