A small boat capsized this Tuesday when it was about to reach the coast of Lanzarote and more than thirty immigrants fell into the water, starting a dramatic rescue that has resulted in several deaths. "They don't know how to swim," warned a volunteer who was in the area.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. in a rocky area near the Órzola dock, and it was the screams that alerted the neighbors and emergency services, who were precisely in the area to carry out the transfer of immigrants who arrived during the morning to La Graciosa.
About 20 people, including some young people from the area, jumped into the water and managed to rescue 28 people alive. By Tuesday night, four deceased had been located and there were still several missing, since a total of about 35 people were traveling in the boat, according to survivors. According to these testimonies, there were women and children on the boat.

After a few minutes of agonizing search in the sea, the people who participated in the rescue have been leaving the water. The dangerousness of the area, together with the rising tide and the darkness, has prevented them from continuing the search, as they have not found any trace of more people. “This is hell”, said a witness.
On the coast, there have been scenes of rescued people crying and even vomiting and having to be attended to by the health services. And in the sea, the doubt of the migrants who may have lost their lives without being rescued.
Two of the people who participated in the rescue have reported that they heard screams in the water but when they were approaching the area where the sound came from, they stopped hearing the screams and were unable to locate the body either.
Regarding the first two bodies that have been recovered lifeless, when they reached the coast, the health workers mobilized to try to revive them, but without success.
The third body was recovered after 9:00 p.m. by the firefighters of the Security and Emergency Consortium, who took charge of continuing the search in the water after the first volunteers withdrew.
In addition, a helicopter and a drone have been moved to the area to help in that search, which late at night has allowed another deceased to be located. Finally, the device was suspended around 11 p.m. and will be resumed at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
