It is not the first time that Canarian society has suffered a tragedy like the one that occurred this August 20 at the Barajas Airport (Madrid), when a Spanair company plane was preparing to take off for Gando (Gran Canaria) with 173 people on board (including the crew).
In fact, the first serious accident that occurred at an airport in the Canary Islands occurred on July 6, 1972, when ten people died on an Aviaco airline plane in Gando (Gran Canaria).
That same year the tragedy was repeated. On December 3, 155 people died in the accident of a Convair Coronado of the Spantax company, which exploded at the Los Rodeos airport (Tenerife), a few seconds after taking off.
THE MOST SERIOUS
However, the most serious accident in aviation history was the one that occurred on March 27, 1977 at the Los Rodeos Airport (Tenerife). In it, 583 people died and two Boeing 747 planes were involved that collided due to fog and other circumstances.
The crashed planes were KLM flight 4805, a charter flight of the Dutch airline KLM, which flew from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, to Gran Canaria and PAA flight 1736, a regular Pan Am flight, which flew from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, from Los Angeles, California to Gran Canaria Airport, also known as Gando Airport.
Also on April 25, 1980, 146 people died on a Dan Air flight in another accident of a Boeing 727, in Las Lagunetas, near the Tenerife Norte-Los Rodeos Airport.
Also, on April 8, 1984, a single-seater plane crashed into the ground during an air show in Los Rodeos. Five people died in that accident.
