Briton dies after falling down stairs in Costa Teguise when a railing gave way

The 54-year-old British man Nicholas Thomas has died as a result of the serious injuries he sustained in the accident that occurred on October 25, 2025, at a tourist complex in Costa Teguise, as reported by the British newspaper The Sun. His death turns the incident into a double tragedy, as his friend Darren Silcox, 56, lost his life on the same day of the accident.

The events occurred in the early hours of October 25 at the Galeón Playa apartment complex, when both British tourists were leaning on a railing located next to a stairwell. The structure suddenly gave way, and both fell from a height of approximately six meters.

As reported by this media outlet at the time of the events, the accident occurred around 1:30 AM, when the railing, initially described by emergency services as aluminum, unexpectedly collapsed. As a result of the fall, Darren Silcox died practically on the spot, while Nicholas Thomas suffered extremely serious injuries and was evacuated in critical condition by an ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) to the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital.

SUC personnel, agents of the Local Police of Teguise, and the Civil Guard went to the scene, cordoned off the area, and initiated the first inquiries to clarify what happened.

According to The Sun, Nicholas Thomas remained hospitalized for nearly ten months, fighting to recover from the injuries sustained in the accident. However, he finally passed away on July 10, 2026, due to complications arising from the incident.

The British newspaper also includes testimony from family and friends, who describe Thomas as a well-loved person and highlight the difficult process experienced during the months of hospitalization, during which they maintained hope for a recovery that was ultimately not possible.

Following the accident, the Civil Guard opened an investigation to determine the causes of the railing's collapse and to clarify whether there were any potential responsibilities related to the state of conservation of the tourist complex's facilities. The investigation remains key to determining the exact circumstances in which the incident occurred.

The death of Nicholas Thomas closes one of the most tragic episodes recorded in recent years in a tourist establishment in Lanzarote. The accident had a wide repercussion both on the island and in the United Kingdom, where from the first moment it generated great attention due to the seriousness of the events and the doubts that arose regarding the state of the structure that caused the fall of both British friends.
