The Policía Local de Arrecife and the Consorcio de Seguridad y Emergencias intervene on Blas Cabrera Topham street and close several roads in the neighborhood after preventive measures were decreed due to risk of rain, wind and coastal phenomena
The Local Police of Arrecife has proceeded to the closure of a section of Blas Cabrera Topham street, in the neighborhood of La Vega, after debris detachments were detected from the facade of a boarded-up property towards the public road.
The agents were activated after receiving information warning of the risk to pedestrians and drivers. As a preventive measure, the area was cordoned off and traffic was interrupted to facilitate the intervention of the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, whose personnel secured a section of the facade at risk of falling.
From the Local Police, fences were installed and a security perimeter was established that allowed firefighters to work on securing the unstable elements of the building, thus guaranteeing safety in one of the most transited streets of the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, agents have intervened in different points of La Vega to proceed with the preventive closure of several streets, after the mayor of the Lanzarotean capital, Yonathan de León, activated the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) in preventive phase due to the declaration of pre-alert for possible storms, strong winds, intense rains and coastal phenomena.
The street Blas Cabrera Topham converges with Portugal street, both included in the Municipal Emergency Plan as it is an area especially susceptible to floods during episodes of intense rainfall. Its elevation and the accumulation of runoff coming from the ravines located north of the capital, in areas bordering the municipality of San Bartolomé, favor the concentration of water at this point.
Precisely, these geographical characteristics gave origin decades ago to the toponymy of La Vega, a historically fertile space that was destined for agriculture during the 19th century and beginnings of the 20th.
