Ángel Víctor Torres has assured this Tuesday that a "better alternative" to the La Santa shelter within the island will be sought for the immediate reception of unaccompanied immigrant minors.
In addition, he has reproached Coalición Canaria for having "rushed to demand the immediate closure of this reception center", given that it is "considered that if it was opened it is because it was needed".
As the president acknowledges, both he and Dolores Corujo (PSOE) and Jesús Machín (CC), among others, have "made themselves available and intervened directly" to address the situation after the fight.
On the other hand, "the General Directorate of Child Protection" has transferred to resources in Gran Canaria the thirteen minors of Maghreb origin involved in the fight that occurred on Sunday in La Santa, in Lanzarote, between a group of boys who arrived in boats and other young people from the island itself, as La Voz advanced.
According to EFE, "they have stated that they are between 16 and 17 years old", although "there is suspicion that they have lied about their age and are adults".
Regarding the controversial issue of the fight, the president acknowledges that "what needs to be done is to help and support measures that build a more supportive Canary Islands".
He makes it clear that "a dignified treatment must be given to a tremendously vulnerable population that is also underage, and it must be done in a balanced way, sharing among all the islands".
"I regret the xenophobic messages that are usually spread in these situations"
He has also lamented "the xenophobic messages" that are usually spread against immigrants when these situations occur, "in which the PSOE is not going to participate", he admits. Torres has assured that the Canary Islands Government "always helps", although "others are the ones who put obstacles in the way".
