The social and cultural association for women Mararía will move its current offices from Fajardo Street to the Argana neighborhood, to a building located on the San Bartolomé road next to the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce, the association reports.
This was stated by the president of the feminist group, Nieves Rosa Hernández, during the ordinary general assembly held on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 31 at the Torrelavega society, which was attended by the acting councilors of the Cabildo for Social Welfare, Isabel Martín, and for Equality, Myriam Barros.
The signing of an agreement with the first Corporation, owner of the property, will allow the entity to enjoy more spacious facilities that facilitate the privacy and confidentiality required by its functions. The transfer will take place once the adaptation work of the space and the moving of the furniture are completed.
In the last year, Mararía attended to nearly 5000 people, through its various projects and initiatives, "a figure that shows the importance of our work in Lanzarote, the effort made by workers and volunteers, and the need to continue as an entity that complements the offer of care and promotion of equality and against gender violence of public administrations," said Hernández.
The organization took advantage of the annual event to honor and officially appoint the members Hilda Betancort, Juana de La Cruz and Pilar Poveda as honorary members, "for their loyal and impeccable career, their fighting spirit in defense of women's rights and their unwavering egalitarian will".
The celebration of the IV Elisa Betancort Delgado contest was also announced for this new year, with a focus on raising awareness among the youth population.
"Meeting place for the Women of San Bartolomé"
Regarding the review of the projects carried out or in progress, Mararía highlighted "Meeting place for the Women of San Bartolomé", launched in the past year and which has created "a space dedicated to the active participation of the female population of that municipality, favoring their social integration and promoting their empowerment", she recalls.
In parallel, Mararía has provided training to professionals from different departments of that City Council, so that all the institution's staff acquires the necessary skills to intervene in cases of sexist aggressions.
Likewise, the comprehensive advisory services in psychological, legal, social and labor areas for the comprehensive recovery of women in the Municipality of Tías, with the support of the City Council, have been consolidated.
Another of the most notable initiatives of the entity in the last twelve months has been the implementation of the action "Network of Island Promoters of Inclusion", aimed at reinforcing the attention, information, guidance and accompaniment to women in Lanzarote who are in a situation of poverty and/or social exclusion. This project has provided a specialized, free and confidential service through the figure of the Island Promoters of Inclusion, with the aim of avoiding or reducing the risk of indigence or helplessness. In this sense, work has been done to improve the situation of the cases detected, seeking to achieve full integration and promoting their active and autonomous participation in the social fabric of the island.
In addition, housing resources have continued to be provided to women and children who are victims of sexist aggressions, she concludes.
