To write to pave the way for new generations. This has been, perhaps, the greatest vocation of Lola Suárez, one of the most consolidated voices in children's and young adult literature on the islands. She has been the author selected to celebrate the Day of Canarian Women Writers, in a tribute event that will take place this Tuesday, October 20, at 7:00 PM, at the Espacio La Granja, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and will combine institutional recognition with a scenic proposal inspired by the work of the Lanzarote author. Admission is free until full capacity.
Thus, the aim is to recognize the literary and pedagogical career of the Conejera author, whose work has contributed to bringing the culture, history, and traditions of the archipelago closer to different generations of young people in the Canary Islands.
Institutional Tribute
The event will open with the intervention of the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Migdalia Machín, who will be in charge of presenting the diploma to the author. The writer and teacher Ana Belén Hormiga Amador will offer a sketch of the author's biography and work.
The celebration will conclude with the performance of ‘La huella de Lola, entre la calima y la maresía’ (Lola's Footprint, between the haze and the sea spray), a scenic piece inspired by some of her most representative texts, which will bring the author's literary universe to the stage through performance and live music. It is directed by Nacho Cabrera, from Teatro La República, and features performances by Sara Álvarez and Toni Báez, accompanied on piano by Antonio Brito, in a journey through the characters, memory, and identity markers that run through the work of the Lanzarote writer.

Canary Islands Women Writers Day
Women Writers Day has been celebrated annually in the Canary Islands since 2018 with the aim of highlighting women's contribution to literature and claiming their legacy. This commemoration takes place around October 15, the feast day of Teresa of Ávila, and this year reaches its ninth edition.
Since its inception, with the tribute to Elsa López, the celebration has recognized the careers of Isabel Medina, Olga Rivero Jordán, María Teresa de Vega, Roberta Marrero, Cecilia Domínguez Luis, María Joaquina de Viera y Clavijo, and Alicia Llarena. In 2026, the recognition falls to the Lanzarote writer Lola Suárez, who thus joins this roster of fundamental authors of Canarian literature.
