The Pueblo Maho Cultural Association obtained in 2024 a grant from the DG of Heritage and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands for its proposal for a project to create a mural The Hands Of The Sea on an exterior facade of the San Ginés Fishermen's Association of Arrecife, with the collaboration of the Pancho Lasso Art School.
It is about highlighting the work of the men and women of the sea to not forget the important work they did in the past and also those women canners of the Garavilla factory, as well as contributing to beautify the public space of the port of Arrecife with a work of art.
From the association they transfer the proposal to the entities related to the project and both the San Ginés Fishermen's Association, as well as La Parranda Marinera De Buches and the delegate of the Port Authority of Las Palmas/Puerto de Arrecife accept the realization of said mural and its participation as collaborators.
In its first phase, a contest was called for students of the Intermediate Grade Training Cycle of Applied Arts to the Wall and Mural Coverings with an economic prize for the selected work of 300 euros in artistic material.
10 works have been presented and the members of the jury, who have selected the winning work, have been composed of:
- The Pueblo Maho Cultural Association, as the organizing entity, Mr. Roberto Perdomo (partner)
- The Parranda de Buches Cultural Association: Mr. David Machado (secretary)
- The Port Authority of Las Palmas/ Puerto de Arrecife: Mrs. Carmen Gloria Rodríguez (delegate)
- The San Ginés Fishermen's Association: Mr. Domingo Hernández (secretary)
- The Pancho Lasso Art School: Mrs. María Farraiz (teacher)
The delivery of the prize to the selected work, whose author is Gloria del Carmen Lamamié de Clairac Palarea, will be held in a public event at La Escuela De Arte Pancho Lasso with the assistance of the participating students, collaborating entities, organizing entity and media on Thursday, June 26 at 11:00 am in the exhibition hall.
The second phase of the project will be executed on one of the facades of the fishermen's association by the students of the mural cycle. It will be scheduled for the 2026 course, May or June, within the company practices of the students in the association and in accordance with the coordinators of the school!
The Pueblo Maho cultural association will also provide the economic endowment for the execution of the mural with funds from the 2026 grant.
The third phase will be the public act of official inauguration of the mural already made, which will be held on a future date agreed by all the entities and the Parranda Marinera De Buches that will carry out a performance with pieces of marine folklore.
