In the week of Canary Islands Day, Lanzarote organizes all kinds of cultural events associated with the traditions and identity of the archipelago. Among them, musical performances by Los Sabandeños; Benito Cabrera and José Manuel Ramos; Acatife and Calicanto; Olga Cerpa and Mestisay or Chago Melián. In addition, six traditional craft workshops are organized at the Museo del Campesino.

In the cinema section, the winning films of the Lanzarote Film Festival are screened, as well as the film La Lucha, which also deals with identity, and the animated film Flow. In literature, an opportunity to discuss beautiful things, and in humor, pay attention to the visit of Abián Díaz.

 

CINEMA

 

  • Winners of the Lanzarote International Film Festival

After the celebration of the Lanzarote International Film Festival (FICL) between May 14 and 23, the winning short films from the five official competition sections are screened: national, international, animation, documentary, and from Canary Islands creators.

  • La Lucha

The feature film La Lucha, directed by the Canary Islands filmmaker José Alayón, is screened at the Municipal Theater of San Bartolomé. The session will also include an open forum and will have free admission until full capacity.

The film, shot in Fuerteventura and starring real wrestlers, addresses through Canarian wrestling the broken relationship between a veteran of the wrestling ring and his daughter, offering an intimate look at identity.

  • Flow

Flow is a film about a cat that wakes up in a world covered in water, in which the human species seems to have disappeared. It seeks refuge on a boat with other animals, but getting along with them proves to be a greater challenge than overcoming its fear of water.

LITERATURE

 

  • Verbena Reading Club. The right to beautiful things

After having read and discussed narrative and poetry, the Verbena Reading Club now tackles the essay, a genre that reflects on the present and questions it through critical words.

As a prelude to the next edition of the literary event Verbena, the writer and festival coordinator, Lana Corujo, invites us to this third and final session dedicated to the reading of "El derecho a las cosas bellas" by Juan Evaristo Valls Boix.

When: Wednesday, June 3 at 6:00 PM.

  • Los enviados del Mar

The Plaza de los Dolores in Tinajo will become the stage this Thursday for the presentation of "Los enviados del Mar", the first novel by local author, Bances Karril.

It is the first installment of an ambitious historical trilogy that will take us to the capitulation of King Guadarfia in 1404. The plot narrates the odyssey of a pair of adolescent mahos who are kidnapped by slave traders.

HUMOR

 

  • Abián Díaz 

Abián Díaz returns to Lanzarote with "Show Patético", a monologue that seeks to provoke uncontrollable laughter from the first minute. With direct and relatable humor, the show plays with exaggeration and absurdity to put the audience in the amusing dilemma of not knowing whether to stay in their seats or go out to catch their breath.

When: Sunday, May 31 at 6:00 PM. 

Where: Municipal Theater of San Bartolomé.

CRAFTS

 

  • Workshops for Canary Islands Day. Museo del Campesino

The Museo del Campesino will host six craft workshops on May 29 and 30 to celebrate Canary Islands Day: History, Obtaining and Processing of Cochineal Dye, taught by artisan María de la Concepción García; the Ceramics workshop, developed by the Juan Brito Canary Foundation; and the Palm Basketry workshop, Empleita, led by artisan Yolanda Benedicta Torres Moreno.

The workshop "Técnica de la Roseta en el soporte tradicional, cojín o pique" will also be held, taught by Estefanía González González; the workshop "Jabón artesanal y bálsamo labial", developed by Mama Pepa, Jabones Artesanales de Lanzarote; and the workshop "Cuero, Iniciación a la Marroquinería", taught by artisan Víctor Socas Paz.

When: Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 at 6:00 PM. 

Where: El Museo del Campesino.

MUSIC

 

  • Los Sabandeños

As a culmination of the celebrations, on Sunday, May 31st at 6:00 PM, La Recova will host the performance of Los Sabandeños, one of the most important and representative groups of traditional music from the Archipelago, which arrives in the capital thanks to the Department of Culture.

  • Benito Cabrera and José Manuel Ramos

The performances by Benito Cabrera and José Manuel Ramos (8:30 PM), followed by the Agrupación Los Campesinos (10:30 PM), undisputed references of Canarian folklore.

When: Saturday, May 30th at 8:30 PM. 

Where: Parque José Ramírez Cerdá.

Free admission until capacity is reached. 

 

 

  • Olga Cerpa and Mestisay

Olga Cerpa and Mestisay present the show La Costa de los Cantares, a sonic journey inspired by maritime memory and the historical and cultural ties between the Canary Islands and Africa.

Where: Plaza de Haría.

Free admission. 

 

  • Acatife and Calicanto 

Acatife and Calicanto offer a concert full of tradition, emotion, and Canarian roots.

The voices, strings, and popular percussion create a musical journey through the folklore of the islands and Latin American music.

When: Thursday, May 28th at 8:00 PM.  

Where: Anfiteatro de Las Cucharas, Costa Teguise.

Chago Melián. A Lifetime

A Lifetime is much more than a concert: it is Chago Melián's reunion with everything that has shaped him: his land, his music, and his family, with whom he draws a bridge between the Canary Islands and Hawaii, uniting tradition with the purest emotion.
