María Cruz premieres MAR, her first music video, with which she officially begins a new stage in her career as an artist and presents the first chapter of a musical project built on identity, memory, and the need to reconnect with herself.
The artist, born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria but with Canarian roots on her father's side, who has been linked to music and dance since she was a child, takes a step forward with MAR in the construction of her own artistic identity after years of experience on stage and her participation in Operación Triunfo in 2025, an experience that marked a before and after in both her professional and personal career.
MAR is born after a period of changes, exposure, and learning in which María felt the need to stop, lower the noise, and listen to herself again. The song presents a conversation between two versions of the same person: the María of the past and the María of the present, two women who meet to ask each other what has changed, what remains, and who she is beginning to become.
"MAR is born out of a very specific need: to stop and listen to myself again. After a year in which I felt that so many things had happened in a very short time, I needed to find myself again and ask myself who I was now. The song is a conversation between the María I was and the María I am beginning to be, without trying to decide which of the two is right," explains María Cruz.
The sea becomes the element that unites both versions and the refuge to which the artist returns when she needs to regain silence. Born in the Canary Islands and residing in Madrid for eight years, María maintains a particularly close relationship with the sea and, in particular, with Las Canteras beach, linked to her adolescent memories and the feeling of home.
In fact, the sound of the waves heard at the end of MAR belongs to Las Canteras beach itself, thus incorporating a real element from the artist's homeland into the song.
"The sea has always been my home. I've been living in Madrid for eight years and, although I love the life I've built there very much, I feel an increasing need to be close to that place that connects me with who I am. That's why MAR had to talk about the Canary Islands too. Las Canteras is part of my memories, of my way of understanding silence, and of that place I return to when I need to feel at home," says the artist.
Two Marías face to face
The concept of the song is also transferred to the music video, produced by Grupo Macaronesia, through a cinematic and timeless visual universe in which nostalgia, intimacy, memory, and transformation coexist.
The release is distributed by Altafonte, which accompanies María Cruz at the beginning of this new phase. "The release of MAR represents a very special step in María Cruz's evolution, because we are not just presenting a new song, but the beginning of an artistic project with its own universe and narrative. The two Marías represent two different life moments. The one from the past looks back at what was and retains versions of herself that she still recognizes as her own. The one from the present, on the other hand, confronts everything she has lived through and tries to discover who she is after the changes experienced.
In this encounter, the red armchair takes on special importance, conceived as a meeting point between both versions and as a symbolic space from which María sits, decides, chooses, rejects, and reaffirms herself.
The audiovisual proposal does not aim to literally represent the lyrics, but rather to construct an emotional space in which natural elements and textures—water, sand, skin, wind, and light— accompany a story about identity and transformation.
The beginning of her own artistic universe
With MAR, María Cruz also begins to define an artistic universe where music, dance, and theatricality converge, disciplines that have accompanied her career since childhood.
Her musical proposal moves between pop, urban, soul, R&B, and Latin music, without seeking to fit into a single category. To these elements are added her Canarian roots, sensuality, movement, and a sensitivity that the artist continues to discover and develop.
After years working in orchestras and on stages performing songs by other artists, María now faces the challenge of telling her own stories.
"For many years I have been on stage performing other people's songs. Now I have the need to tell my own stories and discover how I want to do it. I don't feel like I have to present a completely closed artistic identity from the first moment. I want this project to grow with me and for each song to allow me to know a little more about who I am as an artist," states María Cruz.
