The Cactus Garden hosted last Saturday Reencuentro Media Lúa, a fashion show with cochineal-dyed garments created by the young designer Regina Ferragut, a former student of CEIP las Mercedes and a graduate in Design and Fashion from the Rey Juan Carlos University.
The public, which filled the old rofera transformed by César Manrique, was enthusiastic about the event organized by the Milana Association, which had the objectives of recovering "a fundamental landscape in the history of the island", and discovering new job niches to boost the economy of the Guatiza and Mala area, highlighting a local resource such as cochineal.
Those responsible for showing off Ferragut's designs were some of her schoolmates who took part in the project Rescue of cochineal cultivation. Socio-economic study of the town of Mala, prepared between the years 2003 and 2004, in addition to people from the town who wanted to join the initiative.
The passes were arranged in three groups. First, boys and girls from three to twelve years old paraded. Next, men and women, who wore pastel-colored garments made with organic fabrics such as linen. The parade closed with more subtle and delicate designs.
In addition to the fashion show, Reencuentro Media Lúa featured performances by the Fitdance Activity ballet and the singer Esmeralda.
The CEO of the Tourist Centers, Benjamín Perdomo, has publicly congratulated the Milana Association for "the enthusiasm, the overflowing illusion and the work they have done to launch such a beautiful initiative around a crop that is part of the history of this island".
