Óscar Torres Perdomo and Jesús Perdomo Ramírez received the distinction of "Memorialists of Lanzarote 2017" in an act that took place at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday in the El Aljibe exhibition hall in Haría. The center's capacity was too small to accommodate the family and friends who gathered in the northern municipality to support the newly appointed memorialists of Lanzarote.
José Pérez Dorta, deputy mayor of the Haría City Council, was in charge of welcoming those in attendance, expressing his pride that these two residents of the municipality received such a distinguished award. Francisco Hernández, official chronicler of Teguise, then took the floor, highlighting the reasons why the Board of Official Chroniclers of the Canary Islands had decided to distinguish Óscar Torres Perdomo and Jesús Perdomo Ramírez as Memorialists of Lanzarote 2017. Next, Gregorio Barrero, official chronicler of Haría, was in charge of reading the biography of the two award winners and was also the one who gave way to the president of the chroniclers of the Canary Islands, José Antonio Lujan. The presentation of the accreditation diplomas then took place, while the public present supported them with their applause.
Óscar Torres Perdomo and Jesús Perdomo Ramírez had dedicated themselves since 2000, each separately, to investigating the origins of many families from Lanzarote, continuing with many of the proclamations of which there was knowledge. Years passed and in 2007, they decided to unite all the material that each had collected and form a website that covered each of the towns that make up the seven municipalities of Lanzarote. When they were carrying out all this arduous work of research and data collection, the ghost of the crisis appeared and they made the decision to offer all the material to each of the City Councils in a completely altruistic way and, thus, put it at the service of all those who are interested in knowing the history of Lanzarote.
Torres thanked people for their collaboration in his work
So far, the pages of the municipalities of Haría, Teguise, Arrecife, Tías and San Bartolomé are already in operation; therefore, those of Tinajo and Yaiza remain to be put into service. In these municipalities, they are gathering information for some web pages in which visitors can find stories of illustrious people, heralds, sports, folklore, authorities and so on.
Óscar Torres also spoke at the event, explaining some of the details of how he and his partner, Jesús Perdomo, have carried out all this work, which is not easy but very interesting. Torres highlighted the collaboration of all the people who have contributed to making this project a success and was also very happy for the attendance of family and friends to the event where he and his partner, Jesús Perdomo, received such an honorary distinction. The event ended with the performance of the great Canarian musician Gustavo Navarro, who performed three classical pieces with the theorbo.
Óscar Torres Perdomo and Jesús Perdomo Ramírez will thus become part of the list of Memorialists of Lanzarote together with the first of the distinguished, Agustín Pallares Padilla, and the second, José Hernández González.
