Lanzarote - Chinijo Archipelago received the revalidation of the UNESCO Global Geopark accreditation during the XVII World Geoparks Conference, held last week at the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, in Iceland.

A delegation from the island headed by the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, and the councilors of Geopark Lanzarote - Chinijo Archipelago and the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism, Samuel Martín and Ángel Vázquez, respectively, traveled to the land of ice and fire to receive a document that “certifies that we are taking the correct steps in the correct direction. This revalidation is public support for the work we do every day to conserve the territory and turn Lanzarote's natural heritage into an engine for the island's sustainable development,” Betancort highlighted, who extends the congratulations of the president of the Global Geoparks Network, Nicholaos Zourus, to the island's population.

The councilor, Samuel Martín, for his part, pointed out that this revalidation “is the result of our commitment to this territory and a further incentive to continue working for these four years and achieve renewal in 2027.”

Likewise, UNESCO Global Geopark certifications are valid for four years.

The House of Volcanoes and Geopark: a great star in Iceland

The new House of Volcanoes and Geopark, in Jameos del Agua, played a prominent role in the programming of this XVII Conference of European Geoparks.

The director of customer experience and auditing of the Tourist Centers and representative of Geopark in the global network, Isabel Betancort, gave a conference on the transformation of this museum space after the incorporation of the latest generation technological resources it has.

Betancort highlighted a “corner of the island where the rich geological heritage coexists, the result of the eruption of the Corona Volcano approximately 21,000 years ago, the intervention of César Manrique and the accumulated knowledge after decades of scientific research”. She detailed the content of a place that has state-of-the-art technological equipment that allows interpreting ten rooms articulated around the geological formation process of the volcanic tube of La Corona and the transformation carried out by César Manrique in Jameos del Agua; the work developed in the House of Volcanoes and Geopark Lanzarote – Chinijo Archipelago and, 'Planetary Analogues', a vision of Mars on Earth. “It is, without a doubt, one of the most modern in its genre and a reference for all the Geoparks on the planet.”

The councilor of the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism, Ángel Vázquez, expressed his “enthusiasm and pride with the way our House of Volcanoes and Geopark has been received. It represents the success of the transforming power of technology put at the service of the knowledge of communities and tourism.”
