The Cultural Association Parranda Marinera de Los Buches is experiencing one of the most transcendental moments in its history, as it is immersed in a process of reorganization and research of years that could culminate in its declaration as Intangible Heritage. "This would be the icing on the cake for a career dedicated to defending the cultural values of Arrecife and Lanzarote," they highlighted in a press release issued this Friday.

Since its establishment in 1963, the protection of the cultural values and traditions of the Port of Arrecife has been one of the main objectives of the entity.

After a recent restructuring that has led to the administrative normalization and stability of the entity, the Parranda Marinera de Buches is excited about the unanimity with which the Arrecife City Council plenary session voted, on May 29, in favor of urging the Government of the Canary Islands to process the request for inclusion of the Parranda Marinera de Buches in the list of Assets Cataloged as Oral and Intangible World Heritage.

In his speech before the plenary, the secretary and general coordinator of art, culture and heritage Juan David Machado expressed: "From here I want to thank the entire city and the members of the entity, because for us it was essential that the request started from the city that saw us born centuries ago".

If the process is completed, the Parranda Marinera de Buches will be protected by activating the relevant mechanisms for its proper conservation and financing. All members of the plenary highlighted the importance of this cultural manifestation for the city. The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León (PP), in his speech representing the PP-CC government group, stressed: "They are a tradition of the sound and feeling of the seafaring people of Lanzarote, considered the maximum popular naval expression of the archipelago and the most vivid testimony of the links between the men and women of Arrecife with the sea", recognizing the transmission of traditions to future generations.

The spokesperson for the Mixed Group (VOX), Eugenio Hernández, declared: "The most important thing I see is the transmission that has occurred from the generations, it remains alive and many have passed that I have verified, therefore, it is an added merit".

The spokesperson for the PSOE Group, Alfredo Mendoza, added: "We appreciate the work that the Parranda Marinera de Buches has been doing during all these years, all this trajectory and they are taking steps so that the Parranda Marinera de Buches is something more".

This democratic and institutional process of petition to the Government of the Canary Islands is added to the official reception that the President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez Batista, had on May 27, in which the granting of the Gold Medal of the Government of the Canary Islands 2023 to the Parranda Marinera de Buches was commemorated, together with other groups of the traditional culture of the archipelago.

In this reception, all the profiles of Los Buches were represented, such as the acting deputy director of dance Vanesa Pérez, the deputy director of music Gaudencio de León, the person in charge of the maintenance of buches Ángel Diana, the treasurer Juan Jesús Hernández, the young Victor Jesús Hernández and the documentary filmmaker Jordi Vispo, among others, showing that it is a living and dynamic association.

The president Juan Antonio Machado and the honorary former president Paulino García thanked the president for the institutional support in the recognition of Los Buches as Intangible Heritage.

From the Parranda Marinera de Buches, all citizens are invited to be attentive to its cultural program full of recitals, conferences and recreational-social activities, so that they can enjoy both the new creations and the classic repertoire.

In the same way, it thanks researchers, artists and intellectuals who throughout recent history have testified to the history of Los Buches, such as: René Vernau, Joseph Pitard, Louis Proust, Agustín de la Hoz, Guillermo Topham, Gabriel Fernández, Ramón Masats, César Manrique, Pepe Dámaso, Julio Viera, Pedro Perdomo, Óscar Torres, Francisco Hernández, Antonio Jesús Montelongo, Marcial Alexis Falero, Félix Hormiga, Ricardo Reguera, Mario Alberto Perdomo, Benito Cabrera, Bernardo Bravo, Zebensuí Rodríguez, Juan David Machado, Agustín Jordán, Carlos Reyes, Eduardo Salinas, David GP, Darío Machín, Lana Corujo, Damián Rodríguez, Jaime Quesada and Marianna Amorim, among others.
