Trial for the murder of Juan Carlos Tejera

The trial for the brutal murder of Juan Carlos Tejera began this Monday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, although it is scheduled to last until October 29. During the first session, the popular jury that will be in charge of issuing the verdict was formed and the preliminary questions were raised by the Prosecutor's Office and the lawyers of the six defendants, who did not declare on the first day.

For five of them, the Public Prosecutor's Office is asking for 25 years in prison, while for the sixth it is requesting 14 years in prison, considering him an accomplice to the murder.

One of the defendants did not attend the first session, apparently with a problem in his transfer to Gran Canaria. However, he followed the hearing from Lanzarote by videoconference, and he is scheduled to travel to Gran Canaria on Tuesday, where the trial is being held, before the First Section of the Provincial Court.

Of the six defendants -J.C.C.H., N.D.P.P., A.D.D., J.A.D.R., A.E.G.G. and T.R.R.-, three resided in Lanzarote and three others in Tenerife, where they had an alleged criminal network dedicated to committing robberies "with extreme violence."

According to the Prosecutor's Office in its indictment, this organization had in Lanzarote “an organizational structure that facilitated the commission of different criminal acts.” Through it, they began to monitor Juan Carlos Tejera at least since February 2015, until they finally assaulted him on the night of March 12 of that year, when he was in the garage of his home in Arrecife.

There he was brutally beaten and then tied hand and foot and transferred to the back of his own car to the Argana landfill, where his lifeless body was found nine days later, after a "prolonged agonizing period."

In addition to the prison sentence, the Prosecutor's Office asks that the defendants be ordered to compensate the victim's siblings, parents and sentimental partner with the amount of 120,000 euros, plus legal interest increased by two points.
