The Supreme Court has opened a case against Coalition Canaria senator, Pedro San Ginés, for crimes of false accusation and false testimony in relation to a complaint about alleged irregularities in public contracting in Lanzarote that he made in 2009 against the deceased Antonio González, according to the Prosecutor's Office, with "the intention of not telling the truth."

Magistrate Vicente Magro will be in charge of directing the investigation against the former president of the Island Council of Lanzarote, after the Supreme Court received a reasoned statement from the Criminal Court number 3 of Arrecife, the body that was in charge of the case.

This court addressed the Supreme Court after San Ginés acquired the status of senator for the Canary Islands and, therefore, became subject to the jurisdiction of the high court.

The Chamber has confirmed that there are indications that San Ginés may have committed the crimes for which he is accused by the Prosecutor's Office, which is asking for a year and a half in prison and disqualification for the duration of the sentence.

The events date back, according to the Supreme Court's order, to 2009, when San Ginés held the position of president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and of the island's public entity Centers for Arts, Culture and Tourism.

San Ginés voluntarily appeared before the police station in Costa Teguise to report irregularities in the contracting of certain services committed by various people, although, according to the Prosecutor's Office, the now senator narrated these irregularities "with the intention of not telling the objective truth, and with manifest contempt for it."

He later testified as a witness in the judicial proceedings opened by his complaint and, "under oath or promise to tell the truth," the Prosecutor's Office maintains, "he again stated, failing to tell the objective truth, the same irregularities in the contracting of services imputed."

Ten years later he testified again and maintained the previous accusations; a few days later that case was provisionally dismissed, according to the Prosecutor's Office's account.

This is not the only criminal proceeding that San Ginés has pending, as will be recalled, he has a case for the irregular payments when he was president to his lawyer friend Ignacio Calatayud.
