One of the nine “mules” arrested so far this year at the Lanzarote airport will be tried next Tuesday before the First Section of the Provincial Court. The Prosecutor's Office is asking for him 6 years in prison, as well as a fine of 275,226 euros.

The events occurred on February 2, when the accused arrived on the island on a flight from Madrid. After arousing the suspicion of the agents, he was referred to the hospital for an analysis, which determined that he was carrying 99 capsules inside his body, of a substance that turned out to be cocaine.

In total, the drug yielded a weight of 971.39 grams, which according to the Prosecutor's Office “would have reached a value of 91,742 euros in the illicit market.”

The accused, who has no criminal record and has been in pre-trial detention since his arrest, could have reached a settlement agreement with the Public Prosecutor's Office, which would involve confessing the crime and obtaining a reduction in the sentence initially requested.
