The First Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas will try next Monday, January 22 in Arrecife a man accused of skippering a boat from Morocco to Lanzarote.

According to the indictment of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the accused A.L. would have agreed with other people who have not been identified and moved in order to enrich themselves, charged various amounts of money to migrants to transfer them from the coasts of the Alawi country to the Canary Islands.

All this, according to the Prosecutor's Office, "knowing that they were violating the rules on entry into the national territory and that once they arrived, they would be in an irregular situation in Spain."

The precarious boat left the Moroccan coast with 57 migrants on board and reached the island on September 7 last year.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has classified these acts as a crime against the rights of foreign citizens and is asking for a sentence of eight years in prison for the accused, special disqualification for the right to passive suffrage during the term of the sentence and payment of costs.
