The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, celebrated this Thursday in the Plenary Hall of the island institution the ceremony for the delivery of the 57 certifications of recognition of the brand “Commitment to Responsible Tourism SICTED”, corresponding to the 2025 fiscal year.
SICTED is the Spanish Integral System of Tourist Quality in Destinations. It is a national project promoted by the Secretariat of State for Tourism (SETUR) and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).
The event was attended by the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort; the Director General of Infrastructure, Sustainability and Tourist Quality of the Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Héctor Mateo Castañeyra; and the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández, along with representatives of companies, public entities, tourist services and professionals linked to the destination.
In this edition, 4 tourist services receive the certification for the first time: Barceló Playa Blanca, Local Police of Tías, Blve Homes and the Traveler Assistance Office of the Arrecife Bus Interchange. The remaining, 53 tourist services, renew this distinction, consolidating their commitment to continuous improvement, visitor attention and the destination's quality standards.
Currently, the SICTED Lanzarote Destination has 96 distinguished tourist services with the SICTED "Commitment to Tourist Quality" brand and a total of 114 tourist services participating in the project management platform.
The distinctions delivered this year correspond to a broad representation of the island's tourism ecosystem, including accommodation establishments, rural accommodations, tourist attractions, beaches, tourist information offices, travel agencies, vehicle rental companies, shops, cafes, citizen security services, theme parks, tourist transport and official tour guides.
Among the recognized services are Aloe Plus Lanzarote, with seven certifications; CACT Lanzarote, with thirteen certifications corresponding to tourist attractions, restaurants, and cafes; CICAR, Autos Cabrera Medina, and Payless; different hotel and accommodation establishments on the island; tourist information offices in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, and César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport; Costa Teguise beaches; Local Police forces; Lanzarote Bus; Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park; Club La Santa; Viajes Insular; Villas Alondra; and five official tourism guides.
"Destination Coherence as a Whole"
The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, congratulated all the distinguished companies, entities, and professionals, highlighting that "each certification represents many hours of work, review, training, internal improvement, and real commitment to Lanzarote."
Betancort stressed that "tourist excellence is not built solely by institutions, but by each hotel, each information office, each guide, each shop, each beach, each transport service, each security force, and each company that understands that serving visitors well also means taking care of the reputation, identity, and future of our island."
In this regard, the president recalled that "Lanzarote competes in an increasingly demanding tourist scenario, where having an extraordinary landscape is no longer enough. We need excellent services, involved professionals, and committed companies with a more responsible, more sustainable model, and one more aligned with what we want to be as a destination."
Héctor Mateo Castañeyra, Director General of Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Tourist Quality of the Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, pointed out during his speech that "we must provide content to a system update process, which, in addition to introducing new concepts, will facilitate the management of participating destinations." "The effort of the business community must be met with a response from the public administration, because the investment must be commensurate with the renovation and incorporation of new infrastructures available to the destination," he added.
For his part, the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández, highlighted that SICTED "emerged on the island 20 years ago as a pilot project that allows us to advance jointly as a destination, establishing a shared culture of quality and continuous improvement."
Fernández pointed out that “the current tourist increasingly values the coherence of the destination as a whole. Their experience does not depend solely on accommodation or a specific visit, but on the sum of all points of contact: the information they receive, mobility, beaches, restaurants, shops, security, activities, tourist centers, and the professional attention they find during their stay,” and highlighted that the new structure will incorporate new sustainability requirements in the destination and technological innovation, in order to guarantee that minimum standards are met in this area. “A methodological change that will reinforce Lanzarote's role in the national context,” he concluded.
Likewise, he stressed that “at SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, we understand these types of certifications as a strategic tool to reinforce the destination's competitiveness, raise service standards, and support the sector in its adaptation to the new demands of the tourism market.”
The event concluded with the presentation of the badges to the certified tourist services and a group photograph with the recognized institutional representatives, companies, entities, and professionals.
