Lanzarote hotels increased their rates by 16.8% in July compared to last year to 150.4 euros per night and in August by 8.5% to 156.8 euros, according to data from the latest survey of tourist accommodation from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
The island's hotel establishments thus managed to earn 70.2 million euros in July and almost 76 million in August, which is 12.77 million euros more than last year when between both months the hotels earned 133.3 million euros.
The first of the two major tourist months of the summer presented an occupancy per hotel room of 82.5%, which in August rose to 85.6%.
The average stay in tourist accommodation in Lanzarote was 7.7 days in July, while in August it managed to reach 8 days.
The summer months, however, were not positive for employment in hotels. In July, 554 jobs were lost and in August there were 316. Currently there are 9,389 people working in the island's hotels, which, despite the fall, represent 2% more than there were in August last year.
