During the month of October, many of the shipping companies specializing in cruise tourism carry out their circuits through the Canary Islands to position their ships on routes through South America, the Caribbean and even Antarctica, after concluding the high summer season in the Mediterranean or Northern Europe, which ends in October coinciding with the time change.
This singularity is confirmed by the high number of requests received by the Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) to authorize stopovers in Arrecife, the closest state-owned Canary Island port to the docks on the northwestern coast of Africa, and ports in the Strait and Mediterranean, during this month of October.
According to APLP forecasts, Arrecife is scheduled to receive 22 cruise ship calls during this month of October, registering a double-digit increase compared to past seasons. Among these calls, the mega cruise ships Explorer of the Seas, MSC Virtuosa, Costa Fortuna, Spirit of Discovery, and Norwegian Dawn are registered, among others.
But, in addition, the capital of Lanzarote will receive several boutique cruises this October, specializing in adventurous travelers with high purchasing power. On October 6th and 9th, Arrecife will receive the docking of World Explore and World Traveller, ships with Rolls Royce engines, with the latest hybrid propulsion and energy management system. They are newly built ships and accommodate 200 passengers and 170 crew members.
The World Navigator, from the same Portuguese company Mystic Cruises, is scheduled to call on October 25. These boutique cruises, with passengers of high purchasing power, will continue their routes to South America to carry out exploration trips to Antarctica in the coming months.
Arrecife to Welcome 12,000 Cruise Passengers on October 10th
On Friday, October 10th, the city of Arrecife will receive the presence of almost 12,000 tourists traveling on the super cruise ships Spirit of Discovery, Costa Fortuna, and Nautica, with tourists of American nationality, mainly, traveling with the company Oceania Cruises.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, who is the only representative of a public institution on the Board of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, has highlighted that "the new cruise season in Lanzarote is shaping up with a significant boom, where shipping companies appreciate the availability of two new cruise terminals, inaugurated this year."
For her part, the Councilor for Tourism and Commerce, Eli Merino, continues to promote Arrecife abroad among cruise lines in order to continue strengthening the synergies that this segment of tourism brings to the local economy.
