The 42 social housing units in Los Ajaches, in Playa Blanca (Yaiza), which were acquired in January 2025 following an agreement between the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), have not yet been distributed among the thousands of applicants for public housing in Lanzarote

In the midst of a housing crisis, sources from the Cabildo of Lanzarote have explained to La Voz that they are still "immersed in the procedure" of transferring these 42 homes to ICAVI so that this public entity, dependent on the Government of the Canary Islands, will be in charge of awarding them, conserving them, and maintaining them.

The acquisition of these homes, located in the Montaña Blanca area and costing 9.3 million euros, was approved in December 2024 and their purchase was carried out in January of this year. However, none of this nearly fifty properties has yet served to alleviate the housing emergency situation the island is suffering from.

Island sources have assured *La Voz* that it is common for these types of procedures to be delayed and they prefer not to give estimated dates for when they can be awarded

These properties are intended for affordable rental. They are attached single-family homes, three of which are fully adapted for people with reduced mobility, and they have a surface area of one hundred square meters.

With data from the Ministry of Housing of the Canary Islands Government, last year 2024 a total of 2,295 families were registered as applicants for public housing seeking a solution to the housing crisis that is plaguing the island

Who will be able to access these homes?

The first requirement to access social housing for rent or sale in the islands is "to be registered on the list of housing applicants in the Canary Islands". This registry "is unique" and is managed by ICAVI itself, as reported at the beginning of the year by the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Canary Islands Government, Pablo Rodríguez. He also added at the time that priority would be given to people registered in the municipality.
