Pino de León returns to direct the ICAVI after Ortega's resignation

Antonio Ortega resigned as director of the Canarian Housing Institute after his indictment for an alleged crime against sexual freedom

The Governing Council of Canarias has approved the appointment of Pino de León as new director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI).

The appointment occurs after the resignation of Antonio Ortega after the judicial order that decreed his indictment for an alleged crime against sexual freedom. 

De León assumes the management of the body dependent on the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, of which he was already responsible in the 2017-2019 period, with the objective of reinforcing the management of the public housing stock, boosting the ongoing developments and consolidating the execution of the programs linked to the Canary Islands Housing Plan.

Holds a degree in Law from the University of La Laguna, holds a university master's degree in Urban Planning and Spatial Planning from the Menéndez Pelayo International University, in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Administration, as well as with the Diploma of Urban Planner Technician from the National Institute of Public Administration.

Since August 2023, she served as director of the Canarian Institute of Public Administration, dependent on the Ministry of the Presidency. Previously, she held the position of deputy director of the Legal Service of the Santa Cruz City Council of Tenerife between April 2022 and August 2023.

Her institutional experience is completed with political responsibilities in the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, where she was councilor for the Area of Territorial Planning between 2007 and 2015 and councilor for the Area of Municipal Cooperation and Housing between 2003 and 2007.

Career civil servant of the Administration of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, belonging to the Superior Body of Administrators, Scale of General Administrators, Subgroup A1, has held various positions of technical responsibility, among them the head of the Heritage and Motor Pool Service of the General Directorate of Heritage and Contracting of the Ministry of Finance, Budgets and European Affairs, lawyer of the Legal Services of the Government of the Canary Islands, head of the Legal Regime Service of the General Directorate of Industry and Energy of the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Knowledge.

She also assumed responsibilities as Head of Service of the General Directorate of Youth of the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs, Head of Planning section in the General Directorate of Tourist Infrastructure, as well as Head of Budgetary Coordination section of the General Directorate of Industry and Energy, and assumed different responsibilities in the General Directorate of Housing, both as Head of section in the unit supporting the general director and in previous stages of her administrative career.

With this appointment, the Government of the Canary Islands strengthens the direction of ICAVI with "a profile of proven technical solvency, institutional knowledge, and direct experience in the management of housing policies".
