The future 'Law on the Regulation of Tourist Use of Homes' will have as its fundamental axis "sustainability", understood from the point of view of "sociocultural, economic and environmental", and will seek the "balance" between the resident and the tourist. This was explained this Friday in Lanzarote by the general director of Planning, Training and Tourism Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez.

“We are starting, here, on the island, the round of informative sessions, where the objective is to explain the purpose and content of the public consultation that was opened this week, after its approval by the Governing Council, so that citizens can express their opinion and submit proposals on the future regulatory text”, said the general director. The public attendance at the conference doubled the forecast and more than 130 people attended the call.

During his speech, Rodríguez recalled that the initiative that the Ministry of Tourism and Employment wants to promote, intends to "better regulate the tourist use of homes in the Canary Islands", addressing phenomena such as "vacation rentals", which already represents "more than 30% of the accommodation offer in the Canary Islands, with 46,486 homes".

He insisted, however, that as of today "there is no draft of the Law, since the text will be drafted once the public consultation period ends", on November 26, and all the proposals have been studied. “First, we must listen to the population. A regulatory project cannot be drafted without first knowing the expectations of the citizens”, he pointed out.

"Tourism planning has to do with the right to decent housing"

The general director also stressed that tourism planning is an issue “of great importance for the sustainability of the Canary Islands”, and "does not only concern tourism". “It is something much more transversal, which has to do with the right to decent and adequate housing, at affordable prices; with the quality of life, with mobility, our cultural heritage or consumer protection”.

Upcoming conferences in Lanzarote

Miguel Ángel Rodríguez took advantage of the visit to Lanzarote to send a message to the citizens of the Canary Islands and encourage them to participate, both in the upcoming informative conferences and in the public consultation, since “the more people participate, the better the legislative result will be for the population in general and for the sustainable future of the Canary Islands”. He also recalled that, in the sessions, all attendees can "formulate their questions and express their points of view", so they represent a "great space for dialogue" between the different agents and sectors of society.
