The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Valladolid have sealed a collaboration agreement for the organization of the first Autonomous Tapas Competition of the Canary Islands, an initiative that will allow the best gastronomic talents of the Archipelago to compete for a direct place in the final of the prestigious National Pinchos and Tapas Competition that is held every year in the capital of Valladolid.
The protocol, signed by the Councilor for Economic Promotion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Nori Machín, and the Mayor of Valladolid, Jesús Julio Carnero, reinforces the joint positioning of both destinations within the Saborea España network, with the aim of continuing to build a shared strategy that promotes quality enogastronomic tourism and gives visibility to local cuisine professionals.
“With this alliance, we are taking an important step in promoting zero kilometer products, Canarian talent and our capacity as a first-class gastronomic destination,” says Councilor Nori Machín, who also highlights that “cuisine is a great ambassador for our territory, and this autonomous competition will be a platform to promote the chefs of the Canary Islands, with Lanzarote as the promoting headquarters of this opportunity.”
Under the agreement, up to three participants in the autonomous competition —selected jointly by the directors of both competitions— may compete in the national final phase, which will take place in the last quarter of the year in Valladolid. In this way, both destinations reinforce their commitment to promoting enogastronomic tourism, sharing knowledge, good practices and strategies within the Saborea España network, of which both are active members.
The aim is to position their tourist brands both nationally and internationally, highlighting the quality seal of their cuisines and the value of the local recipe book. As part of the agreement, Lanzarote will be the official “Collaborating Destination” of the National Competition of Valladolid, while this collaboration between both institutions remains in force.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote celebrates this step as a new way of projecting the island within the national gastronomic scene. “We continue to bet on a tourist promotion that connects with the authentic, the identity and what makes us unique,” concludes Machín.
