The Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC) recorded the highest absolute number of jobs created in a year in the past year, with a total of 1,139 new jobs, which represents an increase of 15.5% compared to the previous year, 2020, according to has published the ZEC.

This is the largest growth in history, despite the fact that in 2021 the pandemic continued to have a major impact on the economy, especially in the tourism and service sectors in the Islands, which already seem to be on the road to recovery.

In addition, the figures reflect that the projects presented are of increasingly higher quality and generate more jobs, since the average employment per company registered in the Special Zone grew in 2021 from 10.58 to 11.48%, which is 8.6 points more than in 2020.

The highlights include the 60% increase in jobs generated in the field of fishing and aquaculture, as well as the 20% increase in audiovisual productions, a sector that left more than five million euros in Lanzarote in 2021, attracted by the attractive tax incentives, the climate and the landscapes.

Computer programming also registered an increase of 215 jobs compared to the first year of the pandemic, followed by a growth of 55 jobs in engineering and 46 in research and development (R&D) activities, where the improvement is 166% compared to 2020.

It should be noted that these sectors have a multiplier effect on the archipelago's economy, so they also benefit other subsectors and allow talent to be retained in the Canary Islands.
