Lanzarote leads the drop in unemployment in the Canary Islands in August

A total of 112 people left the unemployment lists in Lanzarote last August, which is equivalent to a percentage decrease of 1.6%, according to data provided by the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan).

Unemployment decreased in all the Canary Islands except El Hierro where unemployment rose by 5.9%. In both Fuerteventura and La Gomera the fall was 0.9%, in Gran Canaria 0.7%, Tenerife 0.4% and La Palma 0.3%.

In the calculation of the last twelve months unemployment has decreased on the island by 8%, that is, 615 fewer unemployed than in August 2024, with the current number amounting to 7,077 people.

By Lanzarote municipalities, unemployment decreased in all of them in August except Tías, where it rose by 1.9% to a total of 742 unemployed.

Unemployment fell by more than 4% in Haría, Yaiza and Tinajo in August, while in Arrecife the decrease was 1.7%, in Teguise 1.5% and in San Bartolomé 0.7%.

Regarding the education of the new workers, unemployment decreased mainly among those with vocational training studies, while it increased among university students.

By gender, unemployment decreased more in Lanzarote among women (-2.3%) than among men (0.7%) last month.
