While in general one in three residents in Lanzarote works in the hotel industry, among foreign residents that ratio increases to two in three people, at least among those who found work so far this year.
65.2% of the 10,727 contracts signed by foreigners on the island between January and July of this year were in this economic sector, according to the Lanzarote Data Center based on figures from the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan).
In general terms, between January and July of this year, 31.5% of the total vacancies available in Lanzarote (34,009) were filled by people of foreign nationality, a figure slightly below their population weight, which amounts to 33.6% of residents on the island.
The Lanzarote municipality with the most job opportunities for foreigners is Tías, where they filled 3,158 vacancies between January and July, followed by Yaiza, where 3,058 contracts were signed with people of a nationality different from Spanish.
In third place is Arrecife, with 2,174 contracts, followed by Teguise, where 1,564 vacancies were filled by foreign people.
Almost half of the foreigners who found work (4,966) are Latin Americans, followed by Europeans of a nationality different from Spanish who filled 2,803 vacancies.
People originally from Africa filled 2,210 vacancies and residents from Asia 705. Interestingly, there were 9 people from the United States and Canada who also found work. There are also another 34 vacancies filled by foreigners whose nationality Obecan does not know.
