Labor absenteeism is at historic highs, according to a recent report by Randstad Research, which estimates that 7.2% of effective agreed hours are lost due to worker absence in Spain.
Canary Islands is the third community in the country in general labor absenteeism with an index of 8.9%, surpassed by that registered in the Basque Country (9.4%) and Asturias (9.1%), according to the latest report on the matter by Randstad Research.
La Rioja, Balearic Islands, and Madrid are the only communities with general absenteeism below 5%.
Of the 8.9% in the Canary Islands, the vast majority of absences (85.4%) were with justified medical leave , and the rest were due to other reasons such as strikes, leaves, paid permits, or unjustified absences.
However, when it comes specifically to the tourism sector, which is the focus of another study by the tourism employers' association Exceltur, the Canary Islands leads the absenteeism ranking with 12.1%. The study does not break down absences with or without medical leave.
The tourism sector of Extremadura ranks second (9.7%) and Castilla La Mancha third with 8.2%.
The only communities below 5% absenteeism in the tourism sector according to the Exceltur report are the Valencian Community (3.8%), Cantabria (3.7%), and Asturias (3.6%).
In the other Spanish archipelago, the Balearic Islands, Exceltur has identified absenteeism among tourism sector workers of 5.9%.
Exceltur calculates that companies in the Spanish tourism sector lose almost 6 billion euros per year due to labor absences.
