The hotel and catering industry employs more than 192,000 people in the Canary Islands, 10.7% of the total for this activity in the Spanish labor market, according to the report "Labor Market in the Hotel and Catering Sector," prepared by Randstad Research, the research service of Randstad, the temporary employment agency.

By segments, accommodation services account for more than 102,300 employees in the Canary Islands, and food and beverage services (restaurants and bars) nearly 90,000 workers.

In Spain as a whole, the hotel and catering sector employs 1.7 million people, a figure that has allowed it to reach pre-pandemic levels. In the first quarter, it accounted for 8.1% of all employees in Spain.

The age distribution of employees shows a panorama in which generational change is a major challenge. The group of employed individuals aged 35 to 44 has been consistently surpassed by those aged 45 to 54 in the last eight quarters, and only 13.6% of the employed are under 24 years old, although this last figure has increased by almost 50% in the last quarter in hotels and accommodations.

In the coming years, 38% of tasks will be performed by machines, which means that technological innovations and low employee productivity are the main challenges for the future.

In the next five years, the profiles that will grow the most in the sector are business development professionals, as well as general and operations managers. On the other hand, among the profiles that will decrease are administrative or accounting employees.
