The Canary archipelago is the autonomous community that has created the most employment in the last year, adding 49,700 more employed than in 2022 (+5.23%), according to the latest Active Population Survey (EPA) published this Thursday and corresponding to the second quarter. With this, the archipelago closed June with a total of 999,110 people employed, a historical figure that almost reaches, for the first time, one million employees in the Archipelago.
These data place the Employment Rate at 50.31%, the second highest record in the Canary Islands since 2008. If we look at the quarterly comparison, employment also shows a positive trend, with 21,900 more employees than in the first quarter of the year (+2.24%).
With regard to unemployment figures, the number of unemployed decreased by 22,700 people compared to the previous quarter (-11.2%), and fell by 25,200 in the accumulated of the entire year (-12.2%). Thus, the archipelago closed the month of June with 179,800 unemployed people, 999,100 employed and an active population of 1,178,900.
The Minister of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jessica de León, celebrated this Thursday "the good data" provided by the EPA, highlighting that "all the indicators place the Canary Islands above the national average and make it the community in which employment grows the most." She especially valued that the islands "are close to reaching one million employed, which is a historical figure" and that new jobs are being generated "in all sectors."
In this sense, according to the survey, the construction sector led the creation of employment in the islands, adding 9,700 jobs compared to the previous quarter; followed by agriculture, with 6,200 more employed; services, with 3,400; and Industry, with 2,600. By sex, employment decreases in women by 5,700, while in men it increases by 27,600 compared to the previous quarter.
For its part, the number of salaried employees in the Canary Islands grows this quarter by 23,400. Those with permanent contracts increase by 36,000 and those with temporary contracts decrease by 12,600.
