A visit to the Castillo de San José is a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy a beautiful building. A historic fortress, from the time of Carlos III, recovered by Manrique.
Opened in 1976 in the Castillo de San José the MIAC, International Museum of Contemporary Art, houses an important art collection that offers visitors an outstanding collection of international, national and Canarian artists, a program of temporary exhibitions.
The museum gives way to a restaurant, which is one of the most attractive places in the capital to enjoy a special evening.

Especially spectacular is the panoramic restaurant that Manrique added to the small fortress, and that offers us impressive views of the island's main port and the bay of Arrecife, capital of Lanzarote. The restaurant retains every last detail of the decoration designed by Manrique.
Its gastronomy fuses international and designer food with typical local products. A culinary experience washed down by Lanzarote wines, unique wines that grow from the lava of the volcano, turned to ash.
Without a doubt, the visitor who is recommended to see the Castillo de San José will be imbued with the most bohemian and artistic Lanzarote.
Location and history
The Castillo de San José is located in Puerto Naos, a strategic enclave in the bay of Arrecife. Known as the "Fortress of Hunger", it was built under the reign of Carlos III for defensive purposes on the island of Lanzarote.
Two centuries later, César Manrique directed its conditioning to house the International Museum of Contemporary Art, MIAC, establishing itself as the first museum of contemporary art in the Canary Islands.
