The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate General of Transport and Mobility, has held a new day of adhesions to the Pact for Sustainable Mobility of the Canary Islands, this time in Lanzarote.
The Director General of Transport and Mobility, María Fernández, has traveled to the rabbit island with her team to formalize the incorporation of twelve entities from the third sector into this initiative promoted to advance towards a mobility model that is more accessible, inclusive, efficient, and adapted to the reality of the archipelago.
In this third signing, the Líneas Romero Foundation, the Baleària Canarias Foundation, the Mararía Association, the Mercedes Medina Association, the ATRIA Women's Association, the Contigo Siempre Cerca Association, the AFA Lanzarote Association, the Hermanos Martínez Abolafio Association, La Buena Huella, ASPERCAN, ADISLAN, and ADILAVA have been incorporated. The signing ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Líneas Romero Foundation in the town of Mácher, in the municipality of Tías, an entity that has collaborated closely with the Executive for its realization.
With these new adhesions, the Pact continues to consolidate itself as a meeting space between public administrations, companies, universities, foundations, and social organizations committed to promoting mobility that places people at the center of public policies and contributes to guaranteeing equal opportunities on all islands.
The Director General of Transport and Mobility, María Fernández, has highlighted that “Lanzarote and La Graciosa are, due to their uniqueness, fundamental in this Pact, which is why we wanted to start the signing tour throughout the Archipelago here. Each new adhesion demonstrates that the Pact for Sustainable Mobility of the Canary Islands responds to a shared need and that it must take root where it is most necessary. Today we add twelve entities and foundations that embrace this Pact because the defense of sustainable mobility must begin to be seen as a right that opens the door to other rights.”
The Pact for Sustainable Mobility seeks to consolidate mobility as a fundamental right at the same level as education or healthcare, defend the approval of the Canary Law for Sustainable Mobility, guarantee that free public transport becomes a permanent measure with stable State funding, and claim the recognition of the Canary singularity (insularity and outermost region) to obtain specific and sufficient funding for mobility.
“The pact advocates for more just, efficient, and environmentally friendly mobility, understanding that improving transport means improving the quality of life for all citizens,” stated Fernández. “It is the sum of needs and the knowledge of them, which we receive through dialogue and closeness with the social and business fabric, that is giving life to the Pact. Because this is an open, transversal project with an enormous capacity to generate consensus around one of the great challenges of our archipelago,” affirmed the Director General of Transport and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Finally, Fernández recalled that the Government of the Canary Islands continues to advance in the processing of the future Law for Sustainable Mobility of the Canary Islands, which already has the positive opinion of the Consultative Council and will provide the archipelago with its own regulatory framework to plan mobility from an integral perspective.
The Pact adds 80 signatures
With the twelve new adhesions formalized in this first visit to Lanzarote, the Pact for Sustainable Mobility of the Canary Islands reaches 80 adhesions among entities and individuals. The Pact for Sustainable Mobility of the Canary Islands keeps the adhesion process open so that new public administrations, companies, universities, social organizations, collectives, and citizens can join this initiative.
