Despite the fact that sales of used cars and SUVs in Lanzarote increased by 9.3% in May to a total of 694 units, so far this year there has been a decrease of 18.8% compared to sales in the same period last year. Between January and May of this year, a total of 2,764 cars and SUVs were sold.

In the whole of Canary Islands sales rose by 16.4% in May, registering a total of 7,938 units, according to the employers' associations of the sector Faconauto and Ganvam.

For its part, in the national calculation there was an increase of 3.7% during the last month, reaching a total of 167,379 units. In this way, during the past month for each new vehicle 1.5 used ones were sold. So far this year, the used market accumulates a total of 775,865 operations, which is 3.3% more.

Analyzing the sales channel, the increase in May is mainly due to the increase in operations with used vehicles from fleets; especially from rent a car, which rose 40%, reaching 7,987 units. So far this year they accumulate an increase of 60.8%. For its part, sales with used vehicles from leasing contracts grew by 26.3% during the past month, reaching 11,897 units. Until May they accumulate an increase of 19.5%, with a total of 55,295 units.

The improvement in the production rates of new vehicles is allowing rent a car and leasing companies to renew their fleets and thus inject their used models into the supply of the used market. This recovery of the supply of used vehicles from fleets explains the fall in imports, which fell by 15.7% during the past month, as well as the increase in sales of models between 1 and 3 years, which rose more than 16% in May.

Four out of ten used vehicles sold in May were more than 15 years old

Despite the recovery of the supply of young used vehicles, the data from the sector's employers' associations draw attention to the weight that models over 15 years old had on sales last month. In this sense, 41% of the transactions that took place in May featured a car of this age, which is 9.5% more than in May last year.

Regarding energy sources, operations with used diesel vehicles -which represented 56% of operations until May- maintain the downward trend of previous months and contract by 1.4% so far this year. Gasoline vehicles, in contrast, increased by 6.2% until May, with a total of 286,814 units sold.

Used electric vehicles continue to decline

For its part, operations with pure electric second-hand cars remained low, with a decrease of 13.6% until May, with a total of 4,397 units sold, which represents 0.6% of the total market.

In its case, sales of plug-in hybrid/gasoline used vehicles rose by 16.6% so far this year, reaching 5,890 units. On the contrary, second-hand plug-in diesel/electric vehicles plummeted by 60.7% until May, with 334 units sold.
