After several months of registering increases, the war in Ukraine has ended up skyrocketing fuel prices in Lanzarote, which have reached historical highs, shattering all previous records. Until now, the highest peak had been recorded in 2012, when gasoline 95 was at 1.113 euros per liter, gasoline 98 at 1.184 and diesel at 1.102 euros, according to a report from the Data Center of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

Currently, gasoline 95 has an average cost of 1.34 euros per liter on the island, which is almost 10 cents more than last January and 30.35% more than March 2020, before the pandemic. If we talk about gasoline 98, it already reaches 1.42 euros in Lanzarote, with an increase of 31 cents compared to the same month two years ago and 10 cents compared to just over a month ago.

For its part, diesel has gone from 0.981 euros before the coronavirus, to 1.261 euros per liter, when last January it was at 1.171.

The highest prices occur in the municipalities of Arrecife and Yaiza in the case of gasoline 95 and diesel, while the gas stations of Haría offer on average much lower prices, with up to 10 cents difference per liter.

Increases of 4 cents per month in the Canary Islands

Although fuel in the Canary Islands is still cheaper than in the Peninsula due to the tax difference, far from the prices in Madrid that are approaching two euros, filling the tank in the archipelago has become 4 cents per liter more expensive per month since the beginning of the year, according to the information provided by the Geoportal of the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda.

This translates into refueling the tank of a conventional car of about 40 or 45 liters costs 4 euros more than at the end of 2021.

The price of gasoline had already been rising for months, driven by the increase in demand after the pandemic and the growing inflation, but now the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has been added, with catastrophic consequences in costs, which everything indicates will continue to rise.

Despite the fact that Spain only receives 5% of Russian oil, since it mainly depends on Algeria, the war conflict has exerted some pressure on crude oil prices worldwide, making them more volatile with direct consequences in our country.

In addition, the advisor of the College of Economists of the Community of Madrid, Milagro Dones, estimates that the price of gasoline will continue to grow during the coming months and no stagnation is expected until, at least, the summer.
