The Government of Canarias, through the Directorate General of Water, will tender in the coming weeks the works for the new maritime section of the drinking water supply to La Graciosa, as well as the technical assistance contract for the environmental monitoring and control of the works. The action, which involves an investment of 3,880,266.11 euros, constitutes a strategic infrastructure to guarantee the water security of the eighth island.

The project will allow for the renovation of the pipeline connecting Lanzarote with La Graciosa, an infrastructure installed between 1996 and 1997 which currently has limitations in meeting demand during periods of high occupancy, in addition to experiencing serious breakage problems. The new pipeline will be entirely constructed with PE100 RC polyethylene pipe for supply, DN 160 mm and PN-16, for both the land sections and the submarine section.

The action includes the installation of approximately 1,220 meters of submarine pipeline between the two islands and about 1,100 meters of land pipelines in the connection areas. This new infrastructure will ensure a safer, more efficient, and reliable supply for residents and visitors, while reducing the risk of breakdowns and improving the transport capacity of drinking water.

The execution of the works will take place in one of the most valuable natural environments in Canarias, within the scope of the Chinijo Archipelago, Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve, and areas integrated into the Natura 2000 Network. For this reason, the project has required intensive administrative and environmental processing for more than two years, incorporating bathymetric and oceanographic studies, underwater inspections, marine habitat cartography, and specific analyses of protected flora and fauna.

In parallel to the works, a specialized technical assistance will also be tendered to supervise compliance with all preventive, corrective, and environmental monitoring measures foreseen. The action is being processed as a matter of urgency with the aim of taking advantage of favorable sea conditions during the months of September and October, minimizing risks and temporary impacts on the marine environment.

The Minister of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Waters, Manuel Miranda, underlined the strategic importance of this action to guarantee the supply of La Graciosa and reinforce the reliability of an essential infrastructure for the daily life of the island, especially during periods of greater tourist pressure.

With this action, the Government of the Canary Islands reaffirms its commitment to guaranteeing the water supply in all island territories and to the execution of infrastructures compatible with the conservation of one of the most unique environmental spaces in the archipelago.
